The companies MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP (MLAKOOP), EMUN KOOP. and TAI GABE DIGITALA SL, together with the research centre ISEA, are developing an innovative research project called BIKAIN. Its aim is to research and develop a highly reliable automatic quality estimation system capable of identifying translation errors in an integrated way at sentence, word, terminology and context levels.

BIKAIN aims to address these four main shortcomings currently affecting AQE in order to provide the technological support needed to reliably identify translation errors and improve current processes for generating multilingual content. The significant potential identified in recent technological approaches, such as the use of large language models (LLMs), which underpin the current revolution in generative AI, represents a key opportunity to build on the AQE technology strand launched under IKA and to:

– Significantly improve quality estimation at sentence and word levels. –
Provide a novel quality estimate at the contextual level. –
Provide a novel quality estimate at the terminological level.

BIKAIN is an industrial research project geared towards acquiring new knowledge and capabilities that will enable the development of new automatic translation quality estimation systems, significantly improving current processes for generating multilingual content.

The BIKAIN project began in 2024 and its completion is envisaged for 2026. The project has been funded under the HAZITEK programme of the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness.

MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP (MLAKOOP), together with the company ADDITU and the research centres ISEA and VICOMTECH, are carrying out the MASTERMIND project, which aims to automate oral tests for assessing the language proficiency of foreign language learners, specifically through tests based on open-ended questions.

Open-ended questions enable a more comprehensive and better-founded assessment because they make it possible to analyse not only the acoustic aspects or form of speech, but also its content, that is, lexical and grammatical richness and accuracy.

To this end, a cutting-edge solution based on artificial intelligence is being developed, specifically using advanced automatic speech recognition and natural language processing technology.

The resulting solution will make it possible not only to automate students’ placement tests, but also to monitor their progress.

The MASTERMIND project began in 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project is sponsored and funded by the HAZITEK programme of the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness.

The companies MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP, ARGI VENTURES, ARIZMENDI and AXULAR, together with the ISEA research centre, are developing an innovative research project called ORIENTA, Optimisation of vocational and career guidance processes in educational institutions.

The ORIENTA project began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The project has been funded under the HAZITEK programme of the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness.

MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP (MLAKOOP) participates as a partner in the European project MASTER – Mixed Reality Ecosystem for Teaching Robotics in Manufacturing, an initiative funded by the Horizon Europe programme. The MASTER consortium comprises seven organisations from three European countries, bringing together expertise in research, the XR industry, the provision of education and training services, and science and technology communication and outreach.

The project aims to advance the teaching of industrial robotics through the development of an open Extended Reality (XR) ecosystem that facilitates the development, distribution and management of immersive, interactive, safe and relevant learning experiences aligned with the challenges of Industry 4.0. Extended Reality (XR) encompasses the range of immersive technologies that integrate and combine physical and digital environments, spanning Augmented Reality (AR) through to Virtual Reality (VR), and including Mixed Reality (MR), which enables advanced forms of interaction and integration between the real and the virtual. In this context, MASTER focuses on the research and development of immersive simulators for education and training in industrial robotics, ultimately serving robotics students and professionals in end-user industries.

The XR platform is the technological cornerstone of MASTER. It is an open solution compatible with the XR industry’s main hardware and software standards. It is designed as a development environment that is also accessible to non-experts in XR, with key features for designing and configuring robotics use cases and simulation scenarios, as well as for incorporating advanced interaction mechanisms, such as control using gaze tracking and collaborative multi-user experiences. Alongside its technological component, MASTER is underpinned by a strong educational pillar that works in tandem with that component to give its immersive scenarios significant pedagogical value as an innovative training resource. These educational resources are tested and validated throughout the project.

A third pillar of MASTER is its open calls, through which third-party participation is funded to expand and validate the XR ecosystem. The project includes two calls designed to strengthen both the technological component, through new simulations of robotic applications, and the educational component, through educational resources linked to the new XR scenarios. Through this open collaboration between the consortium and other teams from several European countries (universities, research centres, technology companies and education stakeholders), MASTER aims to make an impact on robotics training, narrow the skills gap and promote the adoption of innovative methodologies and advanced digital tools.

MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP (MLAKOOP) is a partner in the European project ELeVATE – Empowering Women in Net-Zero Technologies, a Policy Experimentation (POL-EXP) initiative funded by the Erasmus+ programme. The project aims to increase the participation of young and adult women in vocational education and training linked to net-zero technologies applied to buildings (Smart Electricity for Buildings – SEB), in the context of the twin green and digital transition.

ELeVATE analyses gender gaps in green VET and STEM, designs inclusive training solutions and tests them in local and regional contexts across several European countries, with the aim of generating transferable models and a sustainable impact on vocational education and training systems and education policy. Through collaboration between VET centres, companies, equality stakeholders and public authorities, the project aims to contribute to a more inclusive, fair and competitive energy transition across Europe.

MONDRAGON LINGUA-ALECOP (MLAKoop) is a partner in the European project SEBCoVE – Smart Electricity for Buildings – Centres of Vocational Excellence, an initiative funded by the Erasmus+ programme (Centres of Vocational Excellence – CoVE).  The project aims to transform vocational education and training in the field of smart electricity for buildings (SEBs) by developing four regional centres of vocational excellence that promote this technological specialisation, educational innovation and the creation of international hubs for knowledge, cooperation and dissemination.

SEBCoVE identifies and addresses skills needs in SEB areas, including IoT-based automation for buildings and integrating renewable energy with smart grid services. It designs up-to-date curricula aligned with the latest market demands and promotes innovative teaching methods, including augmented reality, serious games and hybrid learning environments, as well as flexible certification mechanisms through micro-credentials. Through collaboration between VET centres, companies, research bodies and public authorities in several European countries, the project aims to contribute to a more resilient and competitive VET system focused on the digital and energy transitions.

This initiative is funded under the Comprehensive Plan to Promote the Social Economy (2024–2025), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan

The project was created in response to the many structural challenges facing the sector:  fragmentation of the cultural ecosystem, limited cooperation, reliance on public funding, organisational weakness, a lack of management skills and difficulties in accessing finance. It also addresses the need to adapt to sociodemographic and technological change by promoting digitalisation and the development of sustainable cultural narratives.
